How about this?

Amidst the debate at the General Convention of Episcopalians over the issue of gay bishops, the Convention elected a woman to be the new Presiding Bishop. Turn back the clock a few decades and such a vote would have been unthinkable.

Perhaps there's a lesson in there for the current debate.
